How to Make Your Keyboard Sound Thocky

What Does 'Thocky' Actually Mean?

If you've spent any time in mechanical keyboard communities, you've heard the word thocky. It describes a deep, full, low-pitched sound on each keystroke — the opposite of the high-pitched clack of a cheap keyboard or the sharp ping of a poorly built aluminum board.

Thock is subjective, but most enthusiasts agree: it's a deep, muted, almost cushioned sound that makes typing feel satisfying and premium. The good news is it's achievable at almost any budget with the right combination of components and mods.

The 5 Factors That Create a Thocky Sound

1. Switch Choice

Linear switches generally produce a deeper, more consistent sound than tactile or clicky switches. For thock specifically, look for:

  • Gateron Yellow / Gateron Pro Yellow: Smooth, budget-friendly, and naturally deep-sounding
  • Gateron Milky Yellow: The milky housing dampens sound further for a muted thock
  • Durock L7 / Alpaca V2: Mid-range linears beloved for their deep, smooth sound profile
  • Boba U4 (tactile): If you want tactile feedback with a silent, thocky sound — these are exceptional

Avoid box switches if thock is your primary goal — the box stem design tends to produce a sharper, higher-pitched sound.

2. Lubing Your Switches

Unlubed switches sound scratchy and inconsistent. Lubing is the single most impactful modification you can make to improve your keyboard's sound.

For linear switches, apply Krytox 205g0 to the stem legs, bottom housing, and spring. For tactile switches, lube only the spring and housing — avoid the legs or you'll kill the tactile bump.

Don't have lube? Pre-lubed switches are a great starting point, and many budget boards now ship with factory-lubed switches that are surprisingly decent.

3. Case Material and Mounting Style

The case is your sound chamber. Material and mounting style dramatically shape the acoustic output:

  • Polycarbonate (PC) cases are the best for thock — the material flexes slightly and produces a deep, resonant sound
  • Gasket mounting suspends the switch plate on silicone or foam gaskets, creating a soft, bouncy feel and deeper sound
  • Aluminum cases can ping without proper dampening — but with foam mods, they can sound excellent

4. Foam Modifications

Foam mods are cheap, reversible, and highly effective. The three most common:

  • Case foam: Placed inside the bottom of the case to absorb hollow resonance. Cut craft foam or neoprene to fit.
  • PCB foam: Sits between the PCB and switch plate. Reduces high-frequency ping and adds depth.
  • PE foam mod: A thin sheet of polyethylene foam placed under the switches. Produces a poppy, marbly thock that's become extremely popular. One of the easiest and most dramatic mods available.

5. Keycap Material and Profile

Keycaps are the last thing your fingers touch and the first thing sound travels through. Thick PBT keycaps produce a deeper, more muted sound than thin ABS. The profile also matters:

  • XDA and MOA profiles (uniform, spherical) tend to sound deeper due to their shape
  • Cherry profile produces a slightly sharper sound but is beloved for its typing feel
  • Thick PBT dye-sub sets are the gold standard for thocky acoustics
